How much can you tattoo in 1, 2, or 3 days?
I often get asked by clients how long a tattoo will take and how many sessions they might need. It is a fair question, especially when planning larger pieces. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, I thought I would share some general guidance so you can have a clearer idea of what to expect.
One-day tattoos
For areas such as the forearm, calf or other regions of a similar size, it is usually possible to complete a tattoo in a single day. Sessions can run up to eight hours, and I can cover a significant amount of detail depending on the complexity of the design. Smaller pieces or simpler realism can sometimes even be done faster, which makes it easier to plan and start your project.
Two-day tattoos
Slightly larger areas, like the side of the lower leg, often benefit from two consecutive days of tattooing. This gives enough time to work on more intricate elements, build depth and contrast, and ensure the piece flows naturally with the body. Two days also help manage pain and allow the skin to take more detailed work without rushing.
Three-day tattoos
Larger areas such as the side of the thigh or an entire upper arm extending onto the shoulder typically require three days. This provides enough time to develop the realism, layering and colour that make a piece really come alive. I have also completed outer arm pieces over three days where the design needed detailed planning and smooth transitions across the arm.
Important notes
The session counts above are only a guideline. Complexity plays a large part. A small, highly detailed piece can take as long as a simpler larger area. Pain tolerance, skin type and design intricacies all factor in. This is why consultations are so important, so we can plan sessions that suit both the artwork and your comfort.
Not sure where to start?
If you are unsure how many sessions your tattoo might take or what would work best for your design, simply make an enquiry. We can have a chat about your idea, discuss size, placement and complexity, and I will give you an accurate estimate of how many sessions it might require. This way you can plan with confidence and know what to expect.
Preparing for your sessions
To make the most of your tattoo day, I recommend coming well-rested, hydrated and having eaten beforehand. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed and bring any reference material you would like me to see. Being prepared helps the session run smoothly and allows me to focus entirely on your tattoo.
If you are ready to start your next project, the best way is to submit a request via my GetInk platform [link here]. You can also ask any questions or book a free consultation there. We can discuss session lengths, design ideas and payment options. The GetInk platform even offers flexible finance plans if needed.
I hope this gives you a clearer idea of what to expect when planning your tattoo. Every piece is a collaboration and I want to make sure the process is as smooth and enjoyable as the final result.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. There are no silly questions, only thoughtful planning.
Best wishes,
Tibor
